Assistance

Thank you for reaching out to Good Neighbor Emergency Assistance, Inc. Good Neighbor offers rent and/or utility assistance to individuals and families who are resident of Story County, Iowa, for your current or past month’s rent or utility bills. We do not have funds for rental or utility deposits. Our goal is to prevent evictions or utility shut offs. Often, the help we give covers only a portion of your current rent or utility bill. The amounts we give for rent or utilities are within these ranges:

  • Single Occupants (or living with roommates) $50 – $250
  • Multi-person Occupancy $50 – $350

To apply for rent or utility assistance, please gather the documentation listed below for the type of assistance you need – rent OR utility – then come to our office to make your application on Monday from 9:00am to 11:30am; or Thursday from 3:00pm to 5:30pm. Please check our website (gnea.org) or Facebook Page (Good Neighbor Emergency Assistance Ames) to make certain our office is open. Or call us at 515-296-1449. We can not process you application without the documentation listed below.

FOR RENT ASSISTANCE, THE FOLLOWING DOCUMENTATION IS NEEDED:
Notice of Decision from Story County Community Services (126 S Kellogg Ave, Ames)
Your Lease (Your name must be on it, it must be signed by you)
Pay stubs or Income documentation from past 30 days (if any)
Valid Photo ID
Rental Verification (The form or letter from your landlord that verifies the current status of your rent.)

FOR UTILITY ASSISTANCE, THE FOLLOWING DOCUMENTATION IS NEEDED:
Notice of Decision from MICA (Mid-Iowa Community Action (230 SE 16th, Ames)
Current Utility Bill (Your name must be on it)
Any notices received from the Utility
Pay stubs or Income documentation from past 30 days (if any)
Valid Photo ID
